Grazing Grain Land: How to Add Livestock Impact Without Owning Cattle

What is a grazing partnership on grain land?
A grazing partnership is an arrangement in which a livestock producer brings the animals, fencing, water, and daily management to graze a grain farmer's cover crop, crop residue, or annual forage. The grain grower supplies the field and often the seed. The livestock producer supplies everything animal-related. Nutrient cycling, manure, and biological stimulation move to the grain operation without the grain grower ever having to buy, feed, or overwinter an animal.
The idea isn't new, and Prairie mixed farms did this for generations under one roof until it fell out of practice as grain and livestock specialized apart. What's changed is that a small but growing group of livestock producers now runs fully mobile operations built specifically to graze other people's ground: portable electric fencing, mobile water, guardian dogs, and the trailering to move stock in and out. That mobility makes a partnership possible where none existed before.
Why does grain ground need animal impact?
Historically, Prairie land had benefitted from grazing ruminants — bison, primarily — moving across the landscape in numbers, contributing manure, urine, hoof action, and grazing pressure that shaped the soils grain farmers now work. That kind of impact is difficult to replicate through inputs alone. Livestock cycle nutrients in a form soil biology recognizes immediately, and they add microbial and carbon inputs no single product can fully substitute for.
Lyndsey Smith put it more plainly during the webinar:
"I don't think you can buy a hug and a bug and a jug that is going to replicate what livestock can do on soil. It doesn't mean they need to be there every year. It doesn't mean they need to actually necessarily graze. You can apply manure, et cetera. But even 1 year in 4, or 1 year in 6 of an animal impact, I just don't know how you can replicate that." — Lyndsey Smith, Shady Creek Lamb / Real Agriculture |
Integrating livestock is one of the five commonly cited principles of soil health, alongside minimizing disturbance, keeping soil covered, maintaining living roots, and maximizing biodiversity. For grain-only farms, integrating livestock has historically been the hardest principle to act on. The partnership model is one of the few ways to check that box without changing your operation.

What does a real grazing partnership look like?
Three examples from Lyndsey's operation illustrate the range of options available to producers.
Case 1 — The retired dairy farmer
After an early winter wheat harvest, a nearby grain grower agreed to plant an oats-and-peas cover crop on the shared understanding that Lyndsey's operation would take it as stored feed. Weather derailed the plan on the second field, and the crop was grazed off instead. The farmer, who had been off dairy for 20 years, immediately noticed the manure and animal impact he'd been missing and asked her to come back the next year. The arrangement is now ongoing.
Case 2 — The min-till grower with a biomass problem
A minimum-till grain farmer planted a diverse cover crop after wheat, and it grew so aggressively he was worried about the mat and volume it would leave for spring seeding. He didn't want to work it in, and grazing was the answer — the sheep reduced biomass, cycled nutrients, and left the ground in workable condition.
Case 3 — The seed grower with swaths
A pedigreed seed grower planted a full-season cover crop between varieties for isolation. When fall stayed open, he cut it into swaths to try for hay but couldn't finish the crop off before winter. The sheep grazed the swaths through snow well into January, delivering both feed and field cleanup.
Not every partnership will look like these — Saskatchewan's dryland reality will produce different-looking arrangements. But the pattern holds: a grain grower had a field situation or an underused window, and a livestock producer had the animals and the mobility to solve it.
What are the common objections to grazing grain land, and can they be worked around?
Five come up repeatedly. Short answers:
"I don't have fences anymore." You don't need permanent fences. Mobile livestock operators bring portable electric fencing designed to be put up and taken down quickly. Old barbed wire or page wire is usually ignored — it's easier not to rely on it than to patch it.
"I don't want cows." You don't need to want cows. The whole model exists because the grain grower stays out of livestock entirely.
"What about water?" Solvable, and the answer depends on species. Sheep on green feed have low water demand and often get most of what they need from the forage itself. Cattle are heavier water users and need reliable access, but portable water setups are routine for mobile grazers.
"Won't they compact my soil?" For sheep, surface compaction is minor and recovers quickly. Cattle can cause more, particularly around water sources and in wet conditions — strategic placement of water, mineral, and salt is used to keep them moving and off low spots. Most grain growers are surprised how little visible damage remains.
"What about guardian dogs?" Coyote pressure on the Prairies makes livestock guardian dogs standard equipment for most sheep operations. Barking and neighbour proximity are worth discussing upfront, but the dogs themselves are non-negotiable.

Can grazing help manage tough weeds like kochia?
This is where a common assumption meets the research, and the answer is more nuanced than either "yes, grazing kills weed seeds" or "no, animals just spread them."
For many weed species, ruminant digestion is genuinely destructive. A published Cambridge study on ensiling and rumen digestion found that downy brome, foxtail barley, and barnyardgrass were nonviable after either eight weeks of ensiling or 24 hours of rumen digestion. Grazing weedy fringes, or grazing off cover crops that outcompete weeds during their growing window, can meaningfully reduce those seedbanks.
Kochia is the exception Prairie grain farmers most need to know about. Kochia fed to cattle can still have roughly 10 per cent viable seed passing through in the manure. With a mature kochia plant capable of producing 30,000 seeds, that 10 per cent adds up quickly if manure moves between fields or between farms. The Cambridge Weed Science study on which much of this guidance is built found kochia, redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, wild buckwheat, round-leaved mallow, and field pennycress all retained variable viability of anywhere from 2 to 19 per cent after ensiling plus rumen digestion combined.
That doesn't mean grazing near kochia is off the table. Saskatchewan Pulse Growers notes that kochia has feed value comparable to alfalfa — it's sometimes called "poor-man's alfalfa" — and can be grazed, baled, or silaged, provided it does not exceed 40 per cent of the diet and pure kochia stands are not grazed. What it does mean is that grazing is not a containment strategy for herbicide-resistant kochia.
If you are managing a kochia patch, the current recommendation from Dr. Charles Geddes, AAFC research scientist in Weed Ecology and Cropping Systems, is to start where the problem is worst. That usually means saline areas, sloughs, and low spots where crops cannot compete. From there, combine tools: mowing, cutting for feed, strategic tillage, spot spraying, and planting competitive crops or salt-tolerant forages.
Waterhemp and Palmer amaranth, both mentioned by Lyndsey as escalating threats in Manitoba, warrant the same caution: assume seed will survive rumen passage and plan accordingly.

What's in it for the grain grower?
The value pencils out on several lines at once. For a rough sense of the trade:

Cash rarely changes hands. In most of Lyndsey's arrangements, the grain farmer pays for and plants the cover crop for their own reasons like soil cover, moisture management, or biomass, and the livestock operator supplies everything else. Some fields see cost-sharing on seed. The value to each side is real but non-cash, which is part of why the model works.

How do you find a grazing partner, and what should you talk about upfront?
Start close. Neighbours you already know, local livestock associations, ag retailers who know both sides of the fence, and — increasingly — social media groups for regenerative and mixed-operation producers are all good starting points.
Before animals arrive, agree on:
What's being grazed, and roughly for how long.
Who pays for seed and inputs, if a cover crop is being planted specifically for the arrangement.
Where water will come from, and who supplies it.
Whether guardian dogs will be on-site, and any neighbour considerations.
How quickly livestock can be pulled out if conditions turn — wet weather, ground damage, forage exhaustion.
Any farm biosecurity concerns (feed source, other livestock nearby, weed history).
You don't need a legal contract. A written email confirming the above is enough for most working partnerships, and it saves both parties from surprise later on.
Lyndsey's own framing on the first ask was direct: if you don't ask, the answer is always no. Most grain growers, in her experience, have never been asked, and many are more open than they look, particularly if they're already thinking about cover crops, soil health, or marginal acres.

Do I need to build permanent fences to have livestock graze my ground?
No. Mobile livestock operators bring portable electric fencing designed for temporary use. Old page wire or barbed wire on your fence lines is usually ignored — it's easier to work around it than to rely on it. Cattle typically need one or two strands of high-tension electric wire; sheep usually need three to four strands or netting.
Can grazing damage my soil through compaction?
Sheep leave minimal surface compaction that recovers quickly. Cattle can cause more, particularly around water sources and in wet conditions. The mitigation is management: placement of water, mineral, and salt is used to move animals around and keep them out of low or wet spots. Most grain farmers are pleasantly surprised at how little visible damage remains after a season of grazing.
Will grazing sheep or cattle spread kochia seed?
Yes, at least partially. Prairie research has shown kochia seed can survive both ensiling and rumen digestion, with roughly 10 per cent remaining viable in cattle manure. Grazing is therefore not recommended as a kochia containment strategy, and kochia should not exceed 40 per cent of the ruminant diet. Grazing does destroy the seed of many other Prairie weeds, including downy brome, foxtail barley, and barnyardgrass.
Can I graze crop residue like wheat stubble or corn stalks?
Yes. Wheat and barley regrowth, corn stalks, and pea residue are all common winter and shoulder-season grazing options. Water demand rises on drier feed — corn stalks especially — and mineral supplementation may need adjustment based on the relative feed value. What happens in winter?
Winter grazing — sometimes called outwintering — is well-established on the Prairies and expanding. Swath grazing, bale grazing, and grazing standing corn or forage can extend the grazing season, reduce stored-feed costs, and distribute nutrients across the field instead of concentrating them in a yard.

Does the grain grower or the livestock producer pay for the seed?
It depends on why the cover crop was planted. If the grain grower planted it for their own agronomic reasons, they usually cover the seed and the livestock operator grazes it off. If the crop is being planted specifically for grazing, cost-sharing is common. Have that conversation before seeding.
How do I know if my ground is being grazed appropriately?
The goal on grain ground is different from rotational grazing on pasture. You're not maintaining a perennial stand — you're cycling residue or a cover crop and moving on. Signs of appropriate management include animals being moved before the ground turns to muck, adequate water, and the soil surface left intact. Signs of a problem include torn-up ground, no residue at all, and animals kept in one place past the point of available feed.
